蒂姆是个从小失去母亲的孩子，父亲再娶后，他经常受到继母的虐待，这令他的生活分外压抑，只有星期天由爸爸陪着去赛马场时才感到快乐。不幸的是，他的爸爸不久在建筑工地上被木板砸死了，他失去了唯一的温暖和安慰。从此，每当他委屈烦闷的时候，就去赛马场散心，重温和父亲在一起的快乐时光。可是小小的蒂姆虽然很悲惨，却拥有世界上独一无二的笑。一次，蒂姆又来到赛马场，在那儿他遇见了一个神秘老头，老头以“让蒂姆每赌必赢”为条件，想要换取蒂姆的笑，年幼的蒂姆觉得生活中没有多少值得笑的东西，于是在匆忙和疑惑间答应了他。从此蒂姆失去了他的笑，只是换来了巨大的财富。接下来，善良的蒂姆在完全被颠覆的生活中认识了很多朋友，但是他却不能和朋友们分享愉悦——他不会笑。在尝到了生活中没有笑声的痛苦和辛酸，蒂姆渐渐变得成熟和坚强。终于他决心赎回自己的笑。在朋友们的全力相助下，费尽周折，经过和神秘老头的斗智斗勇，蒂姆和朋友们最终战胜了老头，夺回出卖了的笑，过上了自己所想要的微笑生活。
